Top 5 College website must haves

We wanted to share the top 5 features colleges would like on their website. Unsurprisingly, college marketing and management teams look to their website to achieve greater efficiency in serving and enrolling students.

1. Integrate Course Data

Too often, we find information about a course is held in several different places. There is the version printed in the prospectus, the version displayed on the website and the version held in your course management system (QL, Unit-e, EBS4, etc). Of course, all of these are different, are never updated at the same time and all become out of sync and unreliable very quickly. We encourage colleges to use a single source for course data and it makes sense for this to be the course management system, which in turn, serves the prospectus and the college website.

College websites developed by Qlue are automatically refreshed each day with the latest course information from your MIS.

2. Dynamic Course Finder

Top of the college must have top 5 is an intuitive course finder. Too often we have seen course search tools that are hard work, slow and unhelphul. Prospective students may become discouraged if the way they are searching for a course keeps returning "0 results found".

In response, Qlue developed an Ajax Interactive Course Search that provides real time results to student enquirers. To see it in action visit K College, Uxbridge College, Sussex Coast College or Waltham Forest College

3. Personalised Prospectus

Students are among the most sophisticated web users and expect to have immediate access to the information they need. Waiting for a printed prospectus to arrive in the post or waiting for a bulky PDF to download is not immediate and of course the student still needs to read through the whole prospectus to find the information important to them. A new student enquirer may have to go through the exercise twice if they are considering full time and part time courses, where often there is a prospectus for each. And of course allowing students to download prospectuses anonymously means the marketing team miss the opportunity to collect a sales lead from the website.

Qlue have built an intelligent myProspectus builder that solves these problems and you can learn more about it here.

4. Online Applications

The paper application process operated by most colleges is expensive and awkward. Qlue have created an intuitive on-line application form that changes, in real time, according to the course selected. Applicants benefit from being able to save their online application. Online applications reduce errors as applicants are assisted and data is verified at key stages.

5. Mobile Platforms

Increasingly, college websites are browsed from a mobile device. The most popular devices are iPhones and Android smart phones. Mobile phone browsing accounts for 15% of all website visits and we must remember this figure will be far higher given the younger audience colleges appeal to.

Making sure your college website recognises a mobile web browser and reorganises itself to display correctly will provide the best online experience. College websites that are not compatible with these devices will be quickly overlooked.
